When should you download a Google map?

o When you rely on Google maps on your mobile phone for driving directions (vs. using a GPS navigator like a Garmin) in sparsely populated areas and have a chance of losing your cell signal.
o When traveling abroad—and you want a GPS-enabled map to navigate a city—either by car or foot and you want to avoid using data.
o When hiking—the best trails are usually far from cell signals. Use a downloaded map for driving directions and then as a backup for your trail map. Though for hiking, I highly recommend downloading a contour trail map from an app like AllTrails.

I have downloaded city, regional, and state/national park maps from Google Maps for all three reasons above.
