The Ronin then, and the Ronin today! The "47 Ronin" VS "100,000 Ronin"! https://youtu.be/PzJpxmYWm70 *The content is based on personal studies and experience There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects There are 3 different types of ronin according to the era… 1. Before the Edo period A vagrant of any class who is wandering somewhere away from his/her homeland 2. Edo period A former samurai who has left his clan or lost his lord 3. Today Students who have failed to pass the enterary exam for universities or jobs Before the Edo period, ronin represented any “vagrant” who was wandering somewhere away from their homeland after losing their jobs. If they were lucky, they had a chance of being hired by a different leader as warriors/guards. However after the Edo period (that lasted for 250 years without any wars), the government strictly divided Japan into clans to keep the people under complete control, and prohibited the samurai from randomly changing their lords by teaching them loyalty through Confucianism. So (during the Edo period) a samurai becoming a ronin meant that you are a criminal that was kicked out of or ran from your clan, or someone who unfortunately lost their lords (along with their rights as a samurai). However not every ronin lived miserable lives, because for example the famous swordsman “Miyamoto Musashi” and founder of Kabuki “Chikamatsumonzaemon” were ronin too. Today we call the certain students “ronin,” who are studying/preparing after failing an exam to enter a university, or finding a job. In a way, they are considered “a modern wanderer.” ▼Who is Shogo?
