AI Vs. Drug Resistance |
|
Drug resistance is a major factor limiting the effect of therapies designed to cure cancers and other complex diseases. Francesca Buffa manages a ERC Consolidator Grant aimed at developing computational methods that allow us to better understand drug resistance. Her methods merge network analysis, agent-based modeling, and genomics. The cell is considered as a network of genes and its behavior is modeled as the result of the interactions (signaling activity) of many genes. In turn, cell interactions with each other determine the growth of cancer.
The final goal of the project is to generate a model able to predict the behavior of cancer cells and their response to treatment. This will enable each patient to receive the most appropriate therapy. The method promises to be useful for different cancers and other diseases and could be transferable to other areas of research.
