Back in 1983, Vanessa Williams was the first African American woman to be crowned Miss America. She was unfortunately stripped of her title because Penthouse magazine published unauthorized nude photographs of her. She has since received an apology from Miss America CEO Sam Haskell, but Williams has had to face hardship and obstacles before and after her crowning as Miss America 1984. Williams has had a successful career as an actress and singer but has faced hurdles along the way.
