Three major earthquakes in a span of a few hours resulted in heavy loss of life and property in Turkey as well as neighboring Syria. The reason for frequent earthquakes in Turkey is that Turkey is located at the intersection of three tectonic plates. These plates are Eurasian Plate, African Plate and Arabian Plate. They are constantly moving and bumping into each other. The presence of major fault lines makes this region highly seismically active. Around 95% of the country's landmass is prone to earthquakes. However, this region had not seen such a strong earthquake even in the last 100 years. It was so powerful that its tremors were felt up to 1400 km away in Israel and Egypt. More than 900 buildings have collapsed like a house of cards. Thousands of people are feared dead, thousands more injured and buried under the debris. The Turkish government has sought help from the international community. India has sent rescue teams, medical teams, and relief materials. Countries like Russia, America, Japan, UK etc. and the European Union are also sending help in this difficult time.
