Close-up of Hamas flags carried past camera STORYLINE Israeli helicopters fired missiles at a car carrying a senior Hamas leader on Tuesday, wounding him, killing his bodyguard and a bystander and jeopardising the US-backed road map to peace in the Middle East. Abdel Aziz Rantisi, the most high-profile political leader of the Islamic militant group to be targeted by Israel in 32 months of fighting, said he jumped out of his car when he heard the helicopters approaching The attack on Rantisi began before noon (0900 GMT) on Tuesday, when three Israeli Apache helicopter gunships appeared in the skies over Gaza City. In quick succession, they fired seven missiles toward Rantisi's Jeep Pajero as it was driving in a crowded street, near a 16-floor apartment building. One of Rantisi's bodyguards and a 44-year-old woman were killed in the attack and a further 27 people wounded, including Rantisi's son Ahmed and three bodyguards. Rantisi was injured in the leg and underwent an operation at the nearby Shifa Hospital.
