2022 BMW 3-Series

As with so many other German manufacturers, BMW is transforming its offering from gas to electric offerings, and cars such as the 2023 BMW 3 Series Hybrid are integral to this process. The BMW 3 Series has been one of the traditional leaders in the compact luxury space, and its hybrid variants have proven to be highly capable and likable machines. Nothing much changes for the 2023 model year, but there's still a ton to like. The 3 Series plug in hybrid has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine mated to a plug-in hybrid electric system generating a combined 288 horsepower and 310 lb ft of torque. This might be down on grunt compared to its Swedish competitor, the 400-hp Volvo S60 Recharge,

Those who live out of town might only encounter heavy traffic during the latter stages of the daily commute to and from work. It's in these circumstances, where the roads get congested, slow and polluted, that a plug-in hybrid really makes sense, and the Mercedes E 300 e and E 300 de plug-in hybrids are compelling options for those who want a decent amount of pure-electric range and low running costs for the daily commute.






2022 Volvo S90

Like so many Volvos before it, the S90 Recharge is cooly understated. It's powerful and fuel-efficient, but its clean design doesn't advertise its performance or eco credentials. It's also spacious and comfortable, with a handsome interior and much improved ride. The picture looks even better when you consider the long list of standard features and driver aids, most of which can't be had on any rival at this price.




2022 BMW 7-Series

Luxury and efficiency combine in one package in the BMW 7 Series Hybrid. As hybridized and electric vehicles gain popularity across all sectors of the auto industry, even the most luxurious and tech-forward cars that brands make must adapt. One such flagship vehicle is the BMW 7 Series, a luxury limousine that does battle with the likes of the Audi A8 and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Just like its competitors, the 7 Series is available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain while still providing plenty of luxury features, advanced driving aids, and impressive performance. BMW's luxury hybrid is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six with an additional electric motor that provides a total of 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. However, opting for the 745e xDrive here will cost a pretty premium over similar non-hybrid 7 Series models.


2022 Lexus ES

The Lexus ES 300h is one of just a few luxury midsize hybrid sedans. Fuel economy is excellent, and the 300h handles surprisingly well and retains the Lexus hallmark focus on comfort and serenity. European plug-in hybrids are typically sportier, but the ES remains one of today's best all-around performers.

2022 Lexus LS

Sedans may not be the most popular choice in the US market these days, but there is still a place for premium vehicles with charming looks, high-end cabins, and a refined ride especially with a hybrid powertrain added to soothe the conscience and alleviate budgets as fuel prices continue to increase. The 2022 Lexus LS 500h is Lexus' flagship full size sedan in hybrid guise. It comes with a 3.5 liter V6 engine under the hood supplemented by two electric motors, and you'd expect that LS 500h should offer some level of vigor and excitement but with just 354 horsepower, performance from the large all wheel drive sedan proves to be rather disappointing. The situation is worsened by the fact that the Lexus LS Hybrid isn't very fuel-efficient either, which is perplexing considering that's one of its drawcards. With competitors such as the BMW 7 Series Hybrid, Mercedes Benz S-Class, and Audi A8 Hybrid striking superlative balances between sporty performance, comfort, and luxury, the LS Hybrid's flaws are only made more obvious.



2022 Porsche Panamera

The Porsche Panamera Hybrid may fool you into thinking that with electrification, this is a milder version of the regular Panamera. This couldn't be further from the truth, as, in the case of the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid, the Stuttgart based sports car manufacturer uses electrification for evil instead of good. Don't get us wrong, the Panamera E Hybrid is kinder on the environment and with better mpg ratings, but instead of using a smaller engine mated to an electric motor, Porsche didn't take anything away, it just added more. That means taking the standard twin turbo 2.9 liter V6 or 4.0L V8 and adding a 134 horsepower electric motor to generate up to 690 hp in the top-ranking Turbo S E-Hybrid, dealt to an all wheel drive system via an eight-speed PDK automatic. The results speak for themselves, pairing performance with eco consciousness in a way that no one can rival literally.
