Oil Paint a River Plein Air (Outdoors): 2 Sessions Outside and 1 in the Studio! |
![]() |
Do you love to oil paint plein air (outside on location) or does oil painting outdoors scare you a bit? Some artists get frustrated with the constantly shifting light, the limited time, seeing the correct colors, and swatting at bugs.
Watch Bill Inman oil paint a river plein air (outdoors). The painting of the White River was completed after 2 days on location and 1 day in the studio to finish the railroad bridge and a couple touch-ups to the landscape. It would have been painted entirely on location if it hadn't begun pouring rain the 3rd day (it then rained for a week straight). Plein air painting is challenging but it's also essential for developing the ability to recognize accurate value relationships, atmospheric color temperatures, and the subtle color shifts that occur between light and shadow. The bridge was modified from the actual size to accommodate the composition of the painting. Enjoy learning about painting on location with this fast motion version of the oil painting White River Railroad Crossing. Throughout the video, there are moments of voice-over instruction to describe the painting process.
