German Government Helps Refugee Children Adapt to New Home

video thumbnail
With about 300 thousand refugee children living in Germany, the German federal government is helping these children to adapt to their new "home" through an experimental project.

By setting up language classes exclusively for these children in a regular class in some of the local primary schools, this project set up by the government is trying to help make transitions for them.

The project started in November in the cities of Cologne, Neu-Ulm and Berlin. Refugee students and German students will form a friendship group. They will make up a story and show the story to other students in the form of film, play, music or sculpture.

"My name is Violet. I'm eight years old. I made a cake house with my friend today," said Violeta, a refugee child.

In spite of some grammar mistakes made by Violeta, she has been making great progress under the situation of refuge.

"If children are interested in what they're doing, they will learn more and better. By participating in this project, my students are passionate and positive in learning. Compared with having classes and writing words in a classroom, they'll probably have learned more from this project," said Sabine Wehrle, a teacher at a German primary school in Berlin.

Child education experts believe that it is essential to eliminate any kind of fear from these refugee children by making them get familiar with local German students. As these children slowly adapt to the new environment, they will also be able to improve their language learning ability.

"Based on the observation made by teachers, students are indeed developing friendships with each other. The refugee child and the local child are becoming friends during the two days of the project even though they didn’t know each other before,” said Anna Ochsenreither, the project director in a German primary school in Berlin.
