It has become immediately evident that Erik ten Hag has wanted his side to adopt a more fluid "positional play" style in possession... The main aspect of this style of play is how players position themselves relative to the ball and to their teammates. Generally speaking, no more than three players should occupy the same vertical or horizontal lines when the team has the ball. The purpose of this is to maximise the number of available passing lanes through which teammates can be found and create overloads all over the pitch. Doing this by building up in a 3-2 shape with the corresponding full-back not in the three inverted, tucking into midfield. Dalot-Sancho United's build-up has looked well-improved, and while it is only a small sample size, interesting aspects and player roles seem to be the reasoning for this improvement. Dalot has been taking up a more inverted position whilst United are in possession. Meanwhile, Sancho's starting position has been wider (touchline) when on the right, where Antony will be playing in future weeks. It also means that Dalot can offer underlapping runs, and the defender also has the intensity in his profile to get on the overlap too if the opportunity is presented. A regular attacking pattern in build-up seen so far has been this overlap/underlap from Dalot. The main positive of this role that Dalot is picking up is that he can help in the deeper build-up as an extra man centrally but is also there to aid Sancho on the right. Post Brentford Changes Eriksen Further Foward, Left Midfield Of The Pivot One of the main changes from the first two games is his utilisation of Eriksen compared to the first couple of games... In the first couple of games, McTominay was utilised as the most advanced midfielder in the pivot and looked like a fish out of water, whilst Eriksen was used more as the deep lier, which minimised his impact but exploited the fact he isn't the most combative of players defensively - the balance was all wrong, and United were punished for it. United spent all summer chasing a ball progressor to fit Ten Hag's system in Frenkie De Jong as United have struggled in recent years with quality ball progression from midfield areas with McFred; our performances often looked fractured, and there were never consistent patterns of play. Bruno Fernandes has benefited from receiving the ball in clever areas behind opposition midfield that are positions he often took up but just never had a player of Eriksen's quality to find him this added trust means he's dropping deeper a lot less or taking up counterproductive Front 3 are now more proactive, alert and making more runs in behind... as a forward, it's psychological; when you have more belief in your midfield or know a player is capable of finding you, you make more of those runs. McTominay is benefiting from playing next to him, confidence in his midfield partner #ManchesterUnited #tenhag #premierleague |
