Learn all about keys and key signatures with this beginners lesson. The key that is discussed in this video refers to how many sharps or flats are in a section of a song, or entire song if that song doesn't change key. So when someone talks about playing in the key of G, they are talking about using mostly white key notes, except for F which is replaced by F#. A scale is when you put all of the notes in a key in alphabetical order from the tonic note. If you are in the key of C, then C is your tonic.
