Debate with John Searle on Free-Standing Y-Terms |
![]() |
A debate on the problems caused by Searle's naturalism in social ontology, and more specifically for his X counts as Y in context C formula, by social objects such as debts, rights, permissions, obligations for which there is no X-term upon which the Y-term might supervene.
Debate held at the meeting on Searle and the Ontology of Civilization, held at the Center for Theoretical Studies, Charles University, Prague, in June 2003. On Searle's subsequent revision of his account to take account of free-standing Y-terms see his "Language and Social Ontology", Theory and Society, 37 (2008), p. 453.
