The Perfect Fit - Individualized, Fashionable, 3D-printed Prosthetics | Manuel Opitz | TEDxTUM

video thumbnail
9 out of 10 people do not get the prosthetic device they need to be mobile. Highly trained experts are needed to design tailor-made, perfectly fitting devices. Unfortunately, there are only a few of these experts out there, which means that tailored prosthetics are expensive and inaccessible for many people. Manuel Opitz tells us how digitalization and 3D printing can help everyone find their perfect prosthetic solution. Combining physical fit, function and fashion increases acceptance of the prosthetic, and consequently, life quality for amputees. Manuel and his colleagues also show that combining forces through teamwork leads to better results. Their goal is to try and find the best solution for everyone, from a 3-year old girl who loves the color pink, to a rock music lover attending music festivals. Manuel Opitz studied Industrial & Bio-Engineering and co-founded Mecuris, a startup with the vision to create personalized prostheses & orthoses with the help of 3D-printing technology and machine learning. Today, Manuel analyzes orthopaedic care processes to unlock digital potential for personalized products with the aid of digital tailoring and additive manufacturing for doctors, technicians and patients alike. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
