आज की मार्केट वैल्यू 6000 रुपए प्रति किलो ग्राम है । इसीलिए लोग अवैध तरीकों से आंध्र प्रदेश और तमिलनाडु के जंगलों में पाए जाने वाले लाल चंदन की तस्करी करते हैं हालांकि ये एक लंबे अरसे से चला आया है क्योंकि चंदन की लकड़ियों को बहुत सारे कामों में प्रयोग किया जाता है, पूजा पाठ से लेकर आयुर्वेदिक दवा व मंहगे फर्नीचर जैसे जीचों में किया जाता है । अभी हाल में रिलीज हुई साउथ इंडियन फिल्म पुष्प की कहानी भी चंदन तस्करी पर आधारित है ।
