In 1988, the founders of Fitness Factory came together with an idea to get affordable fitness equipment to the growing population of health-conscious Americans.

The first goal was to provide better fitness equipment than what was presently available at many major department stores in the mid 1980s. The products sold had to be sturdy, stable, functional and comfortable to use. Likewise, these products had to be priced right so they were a great value to the customer.

The founders hand-picked a couple dozen products—mostly strength equipment, free weights, dumbbells, weight benches and power racks— and marketed them under the name Body Builder’s Discount Outlet Inc. Next came printed catalogs, small classified ads in national fitness magazines and before long, the then-little company was launched.

Consumers were quick to recognize the quality and appreciate the value Body Builder’s Discount Outlet Inc. offered. As demand grew, the company began to expand our offerings with soft goods, belts, gloves, flooring and more. Soon after, Body Builder’s Discount Outlet Inc. added cardio products including treadmills, rowers and bikes.

Due to the growing diversity of products offered and the evolution of the fitness industry, a new name was decided upon for the company — this is where Fitness Factory was born.

In addition to selling and shipping fitness equipment both nationally and internationally, Fitness Factory opened a retail outlet store for customers in the Chicago area, the company’s home base. Soon thereafter, Fitness Factory launched its first website, FitnessFactory.com, catering to a new customer, the online shopper.

In the years that followed, Fitness Factory, now expanded to four outlet stores in the Chicago area (Chicago, Forest Park, Aurora and Mundelein), became more efficient shortening delivery times as well as offering in-home delivery and set up.

Today, Fitness Factory and FitnessFactory.com continues to add to our product offerings while maintaining our core values of high quality and affordability. In recent years, the company added a full division dedicated to commercial sales catering to government facilities, military branches, police and fire, schools, rehab centers, apartments, condominiums, businesses, hotels, fitness centers and more.
