While superhero movies arguably increased in popularity since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, the saga has never been surpassed artistically. Indeed, Christopher Nolan’s franchise, which began with Batman Begins in 2005, reinvented Batman for a new generation, proving that superhero movies can be as affecting and deep as any genre. The second film in his trilogy, The Dark Knight, ranks as one of the greatest modern films, while its follow-up, The Dark Knight Rises, was initially controversial but has aged well. Nolan will likely never return to the genre or the character, but the trilogy will stand the test of time.
