The Darkest Hour – A Soundtrack by Chris Lament

A soundtrack by Chris Lament: this is an example of an epic high fantasy or Wushu style orchestration with progressions through different moods - starting with a brooding threat and battle call rising to an action crescendo, to a climactic moment of intense emotion, then a more mysterious and reflective segment that suggests a change in the story arc. The images and captions (which are annotated with time cues to illustrate how they might have worked within an editing context) are just a suggestion of ways in which each movement could be used. It is quite common in battle scenes to have cutaway moments of contrast and/or character close-ups which break up the complexity and confusion of large-scale action sequences and give the audience time to assimilate and sometimes a parallel narrative or counterpoint that is relevant. You might have a large-scale battle, then focus on a few main participants, then an sub-narrative of other characters or activity away from the battle but somehow connected. I’m attempting to show how the music underpins these transitions without losing momentum. I also like to watermark the video with the ‘soundtrack by chris lament’ brand and confirmation of copyright and year of creation, so added a brief martial coda at the end.

For soundtrack work I utilise the following resources: East West Hollywood Strings, Brass and Woodwind; Synthogy Ivory Pianos; East West Symphonic Orchestra Platinum including Symphonic Choirs; Native Instruments Komplete (includes all Kontakt libraries); Miroslav Philharmonik; Era Medieval Legends; IK Multimedia Sampletank; a selection of single 8Dio sound banks and various other VST instruments. I also use a mixture of personal “Chris Lament” sound effects that I have recorded or gathered over the years,
