World Environment Day: Earth warming at record rate, 2023 the warmest year on record • FRANCE 24

On the United Nations World Environment Day, scientists warn our remaining carbon budget could be spent in the next five years, pushing the world beyond 1.5 degrees celsius of warming. Last calendar year, 2023, was the warmest on record at 1.48C higher than the pre-industrial average. The Paris Agreement aims to hold global warming below 1.5C and well-below 2C, which experts say is crucial for keeping earth's systems in balance.
