Based on information George Cogswell collected about George Mottershead who was born in Sale Moor in Greater Manchester. Meet George Mottershead, the visionary who revolutionised zoos. Born on June 12, 1894, in Sale Moor, he aimed to create a zoo without bars. Disliking the way animals were kept in zoos, he experimented with different enclosures as a youth. After surviving a severe injury in World War I, George defied expectations by regaining his ability to walk. Alongside his family, he transformed Oakfield Estate into Chester Zoo, which opened in 1931. Despite initial concerns, the zoo thrived and received elephants during World War II. George's dedication earned him the Order of the British Empire in 1973, and he became president of the International Union of Directors of Zoological Gardens. His legacy lives on through Chester Zoo. George Mottershead forever changed the way we perceive and care for animals.
