video thumbnail
How should we deal with non-recyclable plastic? In her speech, Ling Xiong, founder of Ecobrick IBSH, introduces the carbon sequestering activity of eco-bricking and details her experience in providing an accessible and social outlet to mobilize young, up and coming climate activists. Here she documents the importance of integrating sustainability in one’s life and emphasizes the continual need to make sustainable socially and economically accessible to people around the world. Ling has been taking on active leadership roles throughout her time as a high school student in IBSH. Her leadership approach encompasses the realms of charity, sports, and civics. She founded the Ecobrick IBSH in which she has created a system that turns non-recyclable plastics into plastic bricks that are fit for human usage, particularly in construction. In doing so she has been able to sequester 40+ kg of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and has gained recognition as a youth leader by the UN Youth Affairs office. She is also the captain of the IBSH girls basketball team, leading her team of young and skilled players across many tournaments. Finally, as the president of the school’s student council, she initiates a wide range of activities through the collaboration of students in a parliamentary setting. By doing this, she provides mechanisms for students to reach out to their school to make policies that represent them and bring them together! This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
