Taiwan is holding events to mark the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. On June 4, 1989, the Chinese government sent soldiers to quash pro-democracy protests in the heart of Beijing. It is not known how many were killed. China censors any mention of the incident. Hong Kong previously held events every year to remember Tiananmen even after the territory’s return to China in 1997. But starting in 2020 the annual vigil there has been prohibited as China’s grasp on the city has tightened. Taiwan is now the last place in the Chinese-speaking world where such acts of remembrance can take place in public.
