Victorian Road Rules - Kerbside Bike Lanes: Watching for Bike Riders |
![]() |
Separated bicycle lanes are important for the safety of bicycle riders. They can be between parked vehicles and footpaths and while on the road, you must always watch for bicycles.
Curb side bike lanes are common on Victorian streets as they provide increased safety for people riding bikes. When exiting your vehicle, always look for riders; the bike lane may be on the passenger side of your vehicle. When exiting driveways, be aware you may be crossing a footpath and a bike lane and you must always give way to those walking or riding bikes. Pedestrians must also give way to bicycles on bike lanes and should always look both ways before crossing a bike lane. It is important that pedestrians, drivers and passengers watch for riders when crossing roads, including in the space between parked cars and the footpath, as well as on the road with other traffic.
