Simplifying Scales and Modes On The Guitar |
![]() |
For this video, I wanted to go over my approach to understanding the main scales and modes on guitar, using what I call "The Grand Pattern". It's definitely aimed at someone with at least an "advanced beginner" level of guitar / music knowledge, but I try to go over everything in very basic terms (so don't be scared :). I hope you enjoy and find it useful!!
Also I'm still learning this whole video and editing thing, so pardon the image quality as I experimented with some of the automatic settings on the cameras, as well as a different framerate this time. If you'd like to skip directly to the end solo I did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YwHSScutrqU#t=1170 A few links to share: I found this image showing a good breakdown of "The Grand Pattern" into its basic positions. Very useful for learning, and credit to Jay Skyler for hosting it: http://www.jayskyler-guitarlessons-sanfrancisco.com/images/Guitar-Fretboard-Charts-Diagrams/Guitar-Scale-Pattern-Charts/IONIAN-Scale-Guitar-Lessons-SF-Fretboard-Patterns-Chart.png Here's another image showing the note names from Ultimate-Guitar.com: http://img.ultimate-guitar.com/_img/columns/Fret_Chromatic.png Per Nilsson's Scar Guitar video (highly recommended): http://www.guitarmessenger.com/news/pre-order-scar-guitar-today-per-nilssons-guitar-instructional-dvd/ If you're an AFX2 user, here's a link to the patch I used. The delay and reverb are Strymon units, so there's no delay/verb in the patch. Also I was using an Xotic EP Booster and SP Comp in front of the AFX: http://axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=2184 |
