Manchester United can't ignore their biggest squad issue in the transfer window.
Man United faces several difficult decisions ahead of the summer transfer window but there is one issue that has gone under the radar.

As Aaron Wan-Bissaka took his seat on the Manchester United bench with eight minutes of their Europa League quarter-final second leg against Granada remaining, he would have been determined to make the most of even the most minor break.

With Harry Maguire suspended this was an evening that saw Wan-Bissaka close the gap at the top of the minutes played the chart for United this season, with his 82 minutes taking him to within 218 minutes of Maguire, who is only ever likely to miss a game through injury or suspension.


At the risk of angering centre-backs up and down the land, it was one of the more sedentary positions on the football pitch, although the requirements for constant concentration are certainly mentally demanding. At full-back, the challenge of the modern game requires an impressive level of fitness and while Wan-Bissaka wouldn't fit the buccaneering mould, he still covers plenty of ground up and down the right flank.

While United fans wondered why Bruno Fernandes played 73 minutes of a routine win over Granada, the same question could have been posed about Wan-Bissaka, who has played the equivalent of two full 90 minutes more than United's creator-in-chief.

In recent weeks it's become clear just how little faith there is in those who could alleviate the burden on the £45million full-back. Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams have both done it on occasion this season, but Tuanzebe has rarely been glimpsed recently until pressed into action at centre-back last night, while Williams was the player given the final eight minutes on Thursday.

Williams was the flavour of the month at left-back in the early stages of last season but he's struggled for game time this season and the 20-year-old looks like he would benefit from a loan move away from Old Trafford. With Diogo Dalot's loan spell at AC Milan not wholly convincing, United need to make sure they secure a reliable backup for Wan-Bissaka this summer.

The 23-year-old has now started 24 successive games in all competitions and that number will surely tip past 30 between now and the end of the season.

Right-back is probably the one area of cs squad Ole Gunnar Solskjaer where there is a shortage of competition and alternatives at the moment, given the reluctance to start Williams.

But finding some competition at right-back is equally as important. Not only can it offer cover to Wan-Bissaka, but it can spur him on as well. We only need to witness how Luke Shaw responded to the challenge of Alex Telles to see the benefits of competition in a squad.

Signing a more naturally attacking full-back will also give Solskjaer another dimension. While Wan-Bissaka is improving in the final third he still isn't the finished article. A more attacking option would give Solskjaer the chance to use a back three and wing-backs more regularly as well as another player who could be considered a positive change from the bench.

Trying to sign a reserve right-back might not steal the headlines for United this summer, and it's unlikely to create too much excitement when the names of Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho are continuing to float around, but that shouldn't stop it from being a priority.
