Canadian health officials announced Thursday they had confirmed with Moderna the country would receive 2.8 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine in May in two batches, with the first arriving middle of the month and the second batch towards the end.

Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, who is leading the country's vaccine distribution, said that while he recognized there have been concerns regarding delays of Moderna doses, the government is working to advise provinces as much as possible in terms of when delays occur so they can adjust their distribution plans. A total of 12.7 million doses have been distributed to provinces and territories. He said the shipment delivered earlier this week was originally scheduled to arrive last week, but the objective is still to get Moderna shipments for this month distributed by the end of April.

Deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo said that more than 8.8 million doses of all vaccines currently in use have been administered.

Fortin also said they were still on schedule to receive about one million Pfizer vaccines a week, with it to bump up to two million weekly in June for a total of 17 million by the end of that month.
