In visionary director Paul Thomas Anderson's film, which may or may not be based on the Scientology religion and its founder L. Ron Hubbard, Joaquin Phoenix plays a drifter named Freddie who is taken in by a charismatic Renaissance Man, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), just as the latter's mysterious faith-based, cult-like organization begins to gain momentum in 1950s America. The story centers on the unorthodox relationship between the two men, as Dodd's power and influence grows and Freddie's trust begins to weaken...
