As Earth ages, radiation levels drop, so finding food gets tougher. When Ghidorah crashes down, Godzilla sees it as a threat and battles it, ultimately winning. But the surface is different, not as radioactive or comfy. He goes back underground until humanity starts nuking Japan. To him, we're just an all-you-can-eat buffet of radiation.
