Welcome to Matchday 7 in the Bundesliga! It’s been a busy couple of days since last weekend’s fixtures, with some of Bundesliga’s key protagonists featuring in some important ties in Europe’s premier competition.

On Tuesday night, Bayern Munich weren’t in the mood to be tested when they made the short trip to Austria to play RB Salzburg. The Bavarians, drawing 2-2 in the 78th minute, decided to turn up the heat and piled forward to score four more goals to run out convincing 6-2 victors.

Their opponents this weekend – more on that later – Dortmund are set to play Belgian side Club Brugge on Wednesday night. After two games played, Lucien Favre’s side sit outside the qualifying spots for the next round, so maximum points will be the order of the day for the Black and Yellow away in Europe.

Gladbach and Leipzig also feature in midweek, as Borussia demolished Shakhtar 6-0 away from home, and Julian Nagelmann’s side facing the might of Paris Saint-Germain on Wedneday evening at the Red Bull Arena.

How will these midweek distractions impact their form domestically? There’s only one way to find out, so let’s take a look at this weekend’s fixtures. Bundesliga’s bottom two clubs face off at the bottom of the table, as Mainz host Schalke on Saturday afternoon. The two strugglers have just two points between them – with Mainz having lost every game they’ve played so far this season.

Sunday evening sees two sides vying for Champions League qualification, as Leverkusen welcome Gladbach to the Veltins Arena on the back of their incredible thumping of Ukraine champions Shakhtar in midweek.

But the highlight of the weekend’s action undoubtedly will be played out on Saturday evening as the top two meet in Der Klassiker. Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich go head-to-head in a battle for top spot, with the Bavarians currently sitting pretty at the summit on goal difference.
