What is App Store Optimization (ASO)? Explained in 5 minutes. 2019 Update

You’ve heard of app store optimization, but you’re not sure what it is or more importantly how to do it? If this is you, you’ve come to the right place.

App Store Optimization is the process of ranking your app highly in organic searches on the app store or the play store. This also could include the process of getting your app featured in the store.

There is another term you should know about. It’s called Conversion rate optimization.
After seeing your app high on the searches or in the featured section, what you see on the app’s description page should get you to install the app. Increasing the conversions of people into those who install the app is called conversion rate optimization.

Some people say conversion optimization is the process after being found on search, others say it includes search and installs together. But these are just technical differences and they hardly matter.

Now, how do you do app store optimization:

#1. It’s all about keywords. These matter big time. The app store needs to know what your app is about so when people search for it, they can find your app.

Find out what people are searching for on the app store or play store. To do this just type in words that are related to your app and you’ll see suggestions drop down when you search on either store, these are helpful hints of some keywords you may want to use.

Put these keywords in your App Title, and description. In the app store, you can also mention keywords, be sure to include these as keywords. However, never, never do this at the expense of reading well to humans. At the end of the day, if a human reads the title, and description and it looks like it was written for a search engine, it will fail and fall flat.

#2 Have great screenshots and a compelling icon that make people want to download the app. If possible, have a video showing your app in action. These are very compelling to increase conversions on the app page.

#3 This should have been #1 really, encourage your users to leave positive reviews within your app. The higher your reviews are and the more reviews there are, the higher your app generally ranks.

#4 Increase engagement with your apps. If your users keep coming back to your app again and again, the store can know that users are engaged and this too increases the ranking of the app in the app store or play store.

#5 Try to get links back to your app. This could be from blogs, your own website, videos, other websites. These should be links from places that are relevant to your app.

Generally speaking these together will result in your app ranking higher. So this was what App Store Optimization was, and that was a brief overview of how app store optimization is done.
