He was born on 23 October 1979 at Madras, Tamil Nadu. His real names is Venkata Satyanarayana Prabhas Raju Uppalapati. His father U. Suryanarayana Raju is a producer. Telugu film actor Krishnam Raju Uppalapati is his uncle. He studied at DNR School, Bhimavaram and graduated with a B.Tech. degree from Sri Chaitanya College, Hyderabad.

He resides at Film Nagar, Hyderabad, Telangana. He made his debut with Eeswar in 2002. The film was a poor performer at Box Office. Later he worked in Raghavendra (2003) followed by Varsham (2004) with which he got hit first successful film. Till now he has been featured in 18 films as a lead actor. He is currently working on Saaho with Sraddha Kapoor which is slated to release in 2019.
His last two ventures Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion were the biggest hits of his career which gained him lot of fame and fan following across all parts of India. These two films broke all the record of Indian cinema.
