Hey guys, Brad Litton from SimpleGuitar.com here with a beginner guitar lesson for you answering the question of whether you should start by learning chords or scales first on the guitar.

My answer in short is that you should only start with scales first if you want to be bored out of your skull. Start with learning chords, BUT you should also immediately start applying those chords to real songs right away.

When it comes to learning music, you really need to understand that music is a language and so it's better to approach it like learning your first native language when you were a baby. We don't start kids out with all the grammar rules and structure of language. Nope. They start out trying to speak with total pros (their parents and anyone else around them). In my experience, learning some form of simple chords and immediately using them to play some real songs is really going to help you have a lot more fun and keep you going than slogging through scales when you're just starting out.

Should you learn scales? Absolutely! Just not before you can actually play some real music and you're having a ton of fun.
