STORYLINE:
A Hamas spokesman said rocket attacks launched against Israel on Thursday, which struck the southern outskirts of the capital Tel Aviv, were retaliatory measures against Israel's assassination of its military chief.
Three people were killed when Palestinian militants lobbed nearly 150 rockets into the city of Rishon Lezion, which is the deepest target reached by Gaza militants so far.
Although the rocket in Rishon Lezion, some 60 kilometres (40 miles) north of Gaza, landed harmlessly in an open area, it illustrated the significant capabilities that Hamas militants have developed.
Israeli leaders have said they are prepared to launch a ground invasion into Gaza if necessary, as well.
