Why were Sith Acolytes of the Sith Empire often stronger than Jedi Masters? The Old Republic training methods of the Sith were vastly different from those of the Jedi. Dark Lords would send acolytes into the universe with only enough training to survive. This method was designed to make them stronger by leading them along, feeding their hunger for more knowledge and power. And it kept the master alive longer. Failure in this training usually resulted in death or torture at the hands of their master.

Jedi Padawans were closely attached to their masters during training and not sent out on their own until they had proven they were ready. Most Jedi Knights were satisfied with that rank and had no desire to become a master. Sith Acolytes, on the other hand, were power-hungry and would do anything to earn the title of Dark Lord of the Sith.
