Emory interview 9 1 2019 |
|
Emory Neurologist Dr. Svjetlana Miocinovic interviewing Dan Ben-David Parkinson's Patient with Deep Brain Stimulation in front of 100 2nd year Medical Students at Emory University School of Medicine. The purpose was to show students a Parkinson's patient and illustrate the effect of turning off the stimulators. However, Mr. Ben-David had inadvertently turned off his right side pulse generator two hours prior to the interview. This was discovered near minute 25 in the video. Mr. Ben-David has since the implants 2 years ago ridden over 5,000 miles on his bicycle including a grueling event the day prior to the interview where he rode 78 miles climbing 8,000 feet. Vigorous exercise is purported to slow down the progression of this degenerative disease. In mice, vigorous exercise has been shown to actually reverse the progression. The fact that Mr. Ben-David has relatively mild symptoms with one of the pulse generators shut off (on his worse side) suggests that anecdotally it may be possible to stop or reverse the progression in humans.
