This session explains how a simple simulation strategy was developed to address this issue. The session explores practical applications of the principle of ‘ambidextrous leadership’ through simulation, which involves ensuring there are both breakthrough and incremental approaches to innovation and change. Through the simulation exercises participants are tasked to deal with a set of scenarios that typically emerge in complex rapid change contexts, and they learn how to develop an ambidextrous leadership mindset. They are also taught how to utilize a ‘polar positioning’ tool to extend ambidexterity and navigate the paradoxical tensions successfully. Dr Gaia Grant’s latest research reveals how understanding individual, team and organization ‘Paradoxical Innovation Orientations’ (PIOs) can assist with both fuelling and sustaining innovative change, and the session introduces Dr. Grant’s validated profile tool to assist with identifying and developing unique ‘Innovative Change Leadership’ (iCLi) capabilities. This instrument draws from her research with thousands of survey responses, 70 interviews with heads of innovation and a deep dive immersion into one organization over two years – along with fascinating case studies from Andrew and Gaia Grant’s consulting work with organizations over 30 years. The session wraps up with a detailed checklist, where participants can apply what they have learnt from the simulation to plot the best practices of innovative cultures (including companies and countries) using a summary checklist. Participants can then reflect on these successful best practices before considering broader simulation scenarios where relevant, designed to help map a team’s or organisation’s current and desired states according to responses. SIMULATION QUESTIONS 1) How can educators/consultants use simulations strategies when working with clients and learners? 2) How are simulations used to "map to organisation / teams current and desired state/s” See more about the definitions of simulations: Our approach is along the lines of the standard simulation description, we use experiential learning approaches to present scenarios that are designed to raise team issues and then we demonstrate how to use the model my partner has developed from her research to understand and deal with those issues. We have successfully used this method with a number of executive teams. However, they are not ‘simulations’ whereby people practice a skill, and then get debriefed or assessed. They are simulations that simulate behaviors, ideas, concepts in a safe environment. https://tirian.com/delivery-methods/team-building-simulations-gamification-experiential-learning ABOUT THE SIMULATION PROGRAM: The Innovation Race: Destinations Simulation with Culture Mapping - Collaborators Canvas An immersive simulation designed to help teams explore the organization’s strategic positioning. Using the original Dynamic Polar Positioning (DPoP) model, this simulation identifies current and desired states to look at the big picture and map the organization capabilities and gaps. The end output is to establish a strategic sustainable innovative path with implementable action plans. The simulation has a memorable engaging global challenge theme, where participants are required to visit different regions around the world to explore and map case studies of innovative cultures, countries & companies (best practices). https://tirian.com/key-topic-suites/innovate/innovation-culture-mapping/ |
