Speaker: Dr. Suresh Kumar Dr. Suresh Kumar has been with the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun for the past twenty-five years and his primary interest is researching lesser-known and threatened fauna, their ecology, migration and movement studies, and conservation. He started his research career with a study on pheasant distributions in the East Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot in Northeast India where he discovered a new subspecies of Sclater’s Monal pheasant. He also conducted several bird surveys in Arunachal Pradesh that helped in the identification of Important Bird Areas there. He was then involved in carrying out an ecological study on a new species of monkey – the Arunachal macaque Macaca munzala from western Arunachal Pradesh. Later, from the high Himalayan mountains, he moved to the warm coastal areas of Odisha, where he took up his doctoral research on determining the offshore distribution and migration of Olive ridley sea turtles. Having gained seafaring experience, he was selected as a member of the 29th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica in 2009 and spent five months exploring the Southern Ocean and eastern parts of the icy continent for marine mammals and birds. He along with his team of research students are currently undertaking studies on the migratory cranes and flamingos in Gujarat, Spot-billed Pelicans in Southern Karnataka, Barn Swallows of the Himalayas and Amur Falcons from Northeast India. Deccan Birders is a non-governmental organization founded in 1980 (as Birdwatchers Society of Andhra Pradesh and renamed as Deccan Birders in 2018) by a few enthusiasts of Telangana/Andhra Pradesh with the primary objective of spreading the message of bird conservation.
